श्रावण में शिवशंकर की पूजा :- श्रावण के महीने में भगवान शंकर की विशेष रूप से पूजा की जाती है। इस दौरान पूजन की शुरुआत महादेव के अभिषेक के साथ की जाती है। अभिषेक में महादेव को जल, दूध, दही, घी, शक्कर, शहद, गंगाजल, गन्ना रस आदि से स्नान कराया जाता है। अभिषेक के बाद बेलपत्र, समीपत्र, दूब, कुशा, कमल, नीलकमल, ऑक मदार, जंवाफूल कनेर, राई फूल आदि से शिवजी को प्रसन्न किया जाता है। इसके साथ की भोग के रूप में धतूरा, भाँग और श्रीफल महादेव को चढ़ाया जाता है।

स्मरण रहे कि भगवान नागचन्द्रेश्वर के दर्शन वर्ष में केवल 1 ही बार, अर्थात नागपंचमी पर होते हैं। महाकाल के दक्षिण में वृद्धकालेश्वर, अनादि कल्पेश्वर तथा सप्तऋषियों के मंदिर स्थित हैं, जबकि इसके उत्तर में चन्द्रादित्येश्वर, देवी अवन्तिका, बृहस्पतेश्वर, स्वप्नेश्वर तथा समर्थ रामदास द्वारा स्थापित श्री हनुमानजी का मंदिर है। इसके पश्चिम में कौटितीर्थ नामक कुंड है एवं समीप ही रुद्र-सरोवर भी स्थित है।
पूरे भारतवर्ष में यह एकमात्र ज्योतिर्लिंग है, जहां ताजी चिताभस्म से प्रात: 4 बजे भस्म आरती होती है। उस समय पूरा वातावरण अत्यंत मनोहारी एवं शिवमय हो जाता है।

Mahakaleshwar Temple
The Mahakaleshwar Temple is regarded as one of the most auspicious temples of the Hindus in the sacred town of Ujjain. It has a broad courtyard surrounded by huge walls. There are five levels inside the temple, and one of the levels is situated underground. Dakshinamurti is the name given to the idol of Mahakaleshwar, and the deity faces the south.
It is regarded as one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of India. The idol in this temple is of Omakareshwar Shiva and the deity is consecrated in the sanctum just above the Mahakal shrine. A huge fair takes place in the temple premises on the auspicious day of Mahashivaratri.
